A healthy public conversation does not require everyone to reach the same conclusion. It requires enough shared ground to understand what the disagreement is actually about.
That starts with distinguishing facts from judgments. Evidence can inform a choice without resolving every question about values and priorities. Pretending otherwise makes it harder to listen.
There is room for disagreement without giving up on curiosity, evidence or one another.
A different way forward
Newsrooms and readers both have a role. We can ask more specific questions, make room for context and resist the assumption that the sharpest exchange is the most revealing one. This is a sample opinion essay for the editorial preview.
