More than 150 investors and executives have asked Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne to consider tax changes aimed at encouraging investment in Canadian companies, The Canadian Press reported October 6.
The Canadian Venture Capital and Private Equity Association and the Council of Canadian Innovators organized the letter. One proposal draws on the U.S. qualified small business stock incentive, which exempts qualifying stock gains from federal tax under that program.
A separate proposal would expand access to capital gains tax deferrals when proceeds from certain Canadian business transactions are reinvested in another domestic venture. Deferral postpones payment; it does not eliminate the tax.
The signatories argue these measures would encourage founders and investors to put proceeds back into Canadian businesses. Those benefits are their stated rationale, not established outcomes. The report describes proposals for government consideration and does not provide an implementation date, fiscal cost or official response.
