German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul wants more Canadian liquefied natural gas to help diversify Europe’s energy supplies, according to a September 27 CTV News report by Spencer Van Dyk. In his CTV Question Period interview, Wadephul cited Russia’s war in Ukraine and risks to shipping routes in the Middle East.

He also supported faster renewable-energy development, while saying the transition does not eliminate Germany’s present need for gas. He identified opportunities to cooperate with Canada on renewable technologies.

These comments express demand and policy preferences; they do not announce a new purchase contract. CTV also cited the previously announced May agreement between Ksi Lisims LNG and Germany’s SEFE for one million tonnes annually for up to 20 years, with deliveries expected in the early 2030s.
