A September 29 Canadian Press report by Craig Lord, published by Castanet, says Statistics Canada’s release indicates real gross domestic product for July was essentially unchanged. The agency identified a 1.3 percent increase in construction — the fourth consecutive monthly gain — and a 1.7 percent rise in electricity generation, transmission and distribution, which it linked to a heat wave.
The report also noted a 0.9 percent decline in manufacturing in July, and drops in mining and quarrying, oil and gas extraction, retail trade and wholesale trade. Statistics Canada revised June’s GDP growth to 0.4 percent from an earlier 0.3 percent figure.
Separately, Statistics Canada provided an initial, preliminary estimate for August pointing to 0.2 percent growth; that estimate is subject to revision next month.
