The Canadian Press, in reporting for BNN Bloomberg, says Finance Department fiscal monitor figures show a $5.1 billion federal deficit for April through July of fiscal 2026–27, down from a $7.8 billion deficit in the same four months a year earlier. The figures cover the four-month period only and are not presented as an annual forecast.
Total government revenue for the period rose to $175.5 billion from $163.4 billion the year before, with personal income tax, other revenues and GST cited as contributors to the increase. Program spending excluding net actuarial losses reached $159 billion, up from $151.3 billion, as direct program expenses and major transfers to persons increased.
Public debt charges for the period were reported at $20 billion compared with $18.6 billion a year earlier. Net actuarial losses were $1.7 billion versus $1.3 billion in the comparable period the previous year.
