Prime Minister Mark Carney says he discussed infrastructure funding and support for Quebec workers affected by the U.S. trade conflict with premier-designate Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, according to an October 6 Canadian Press report.
The conversation followed the Parti Québécois winning a minority mandate in the October 5 provincial election. The party secured 59 seats, five short of the 64 needed for a majority, the report says. The Coalition Avenir Québec won no seats after eight years in government.
Carney emphasized immediate challenges facing the country. St-Pierre Plamondon has said he would not hold an independence referendum while Donald Trump remains U.S. president.
The Quebec leader also told supporters he would work with English-speaking Quebecers and cooperate with Carney when it served Quebecers. The report did not identify a new funding amount or signed agreement resulting from the leaders’ conversation.
