Global News reporting (Sept. 27, 2026) says experts and Indigenous leaders are asking if Canada’s diplomatic workforce has the Arctic-specific knowledge needed to support growing defence and economic ambitions in the region. Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami president Natan Obed told the newsroom that Global Affairs Canada lacks depth in Arctic expertise and called for stronger administrative and policy capacity.

The reporting notes that Canada closed its International Arctic Centre at the embassy in Norway in 2023; a briefing cited Oslo costs and estimated annual savings of about $550,000. A May 2025 internal audit, the report says, concluded the closure reduced in-house Arctic expertise and northern contacts.

Global News also reports Canada opened a consulate in Nuuk in February 2026 that is operating from Iceland’s premises with one staffer, compared with three full-time equivalents originally planned. Former ambassador Artur Wilczynski is quoted saying regional contacts and specialist knowledge benefit from on-the-ground presence. Global Affairs told the newsroom planning costs can exceed implementation costs; the cause of the staffing shortfall is described as unclear.
