Respondents to PwC Canada’s holiday survey planned to spend an average of $1,487 this season, 11% less than last year, according to a Canadian Press report published October 6. The figure measures intentions, not completed purchases.
The survey also found that 54% would choose a more expensive Canadian-made product over a similar imported option, compared with 49% last year.
The findings come from an online survey of 1,016 people conducted July 30–August 6. PwC cautioned that the fieldwork preceded the latest escalation in Canada–U.S. trade tensions and might not capture subsequent shifts in sentiment.
The Canadian Research Insights Council says online surveys of this kind cannot be assigned a conventional margin of error because respondents are not randomly sampled. The results offer a snapshot of planned budgets and preferences rather than a guarantee of how much households will ultimately spend.
