The University of Toronto plans to recruit roughly a dozen new doctoral scholars annually through its $100-million Presidents’ Impact Scholarship Program, according to CTV News’s report updated October 6.

Selected scholars will receive $80,000 a year for four years, or $320,000 over that period. The first group is scheduled to begin in September 2027. The university says a call for applications is coming, but the report does not specify an application deadline.

CTV reports that an anonymous Canadian family foundation donated $50 million and the university is providing the other half of the program funding.

University president Melanie Woodin described a model combining multiple supervisors, cross-disciplinary research and experiences outside academic departments, including internships. Research themes include artificial intelligence, health, and sovereignty and the Arctic.
