British Prime Minister Andy Burnham expressed support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during an October 10 telephone call, according to a Downing Street readout reported by AFP and carried by CTV News.
The two leaders discussed maintaining pressure on Russia. Burnham said Britain would continue strengthening sanctions and taking action to constrain Russia’s war effort, building on British designations announced that week.
The call followed a public dispute between U.S. President Donald Trump and Zelensky after Washington moved to ease restrictions on Russian diesel, AFP reported. Britain’s stated position therefore remained focused on pressure against Russia, while the American move concerned easing a particular set of restrictions. These were separate positions, rather than a joint announcement.
Burnham and Zelensky also agreed to meet in person in the coming days. The report gives no precise date or venue and sets out no new British aid package or detailed sanctions list. Its immediate significance is the public reaffirmation of diplomatic support and an intention to continue talks; further decisions remain to be announced.
