Karl Bushby has reached England after a journey that began in Chile on November 1, 1998, according to an October 12 report by Fox News. He announced his English Channel crossing on October 5, bringing him back to his home country almost twenty-eight years after setting out.
The homecoming is a milestone rather than the finish. At the time of the report, Bushby still had roughly 240 miles to cover before reaching his mother’s home in Hull. He hoped to arrive by the end of October.
Fox News reported that the expedition had taken him more than 30,000 miles through twenty-nine countries. The route has involved both walking and swimming, including crossings of the Bering Strait and the Caspian Sea.
Bushby originally expected the undertaking to last twelve years. Border restrictions and other obstacles extended it far beyond that plan. A Russian visa problem in 2012 became one of those setbacks; according to the report, he walked to Washington to protest before the ban was overturned.
His arrival in England brings the journey close to its intended destination, but completing the remaining distance to Hull is still ahead. The accompanying photograph records an earlier stage: his Caspian Sea swim in September 2024, rather than the recent English Channel crossing.
