ABC News reported on September 18 that Fiji was expanding its HIV response after declaring a national crisis. Government figures cited in the report recorded 2,016 diagnoses during 2025, up 27% from the previous year. Expanded testing helped identify cases; diagnoses do not necessarily represent infections acquired in the same year.

In a September 16 statement, UNAIDS estimated that 9,100 people were living with HIV in Fiji in 2025, with 39% aware of their status and 22% accessing treatment.

The response includes plans for broader prevention medicines, testing and needle-and-syringe services. UNAIDS stressed that HIV is not transmitted through everyday contact.
