Reuters reported that on October 1, 2026 government bond yields were higher in several major markets as investors reacted to inflation concerns, upward pressure on oil prices and prospects of further interest-rate increases. The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield was cited at 5.34 percent on that Thursday, its highest level since 2002.
The report said borrowing costs also rose in France, Britain and Japan. Analysts told Reuters that yields matter because they influence government refinancing costs, corporate borrowing and household loan rates.
Some market participants cited large new debt issuance tied to financing artificial intelligence investment as adding supply-side pressure on bond markets. According to analysts quoted by Reuters, sustained relief for yields would likely require stronger economic growth or smaller debt burdens rather than temporary market interventions.
