The BBC reports the US House has passed legislation that would give the president power to sanction Russia and to impose tariffs on nations importing Russian oil and gas; the report says the measure now awaits the president’s signature. The BBC description includes a possible tariff level of up to 100%, but the measure is not yet in force.
Data from the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) cited by the BBC indicate Russia accounted for 30.3% of India’s crude imports in fiscal 2026, valued at $40.8 billion of India’s $134.7 billion total crude import bill for that period. Indian officials, according to the BBC, say the government is monitoring the situation and remains committed to energy security.
The BBC notes that shifting crude suppliers at scale could raise costs for crude, shipping and insurance. The prospective US tariff, as reported, would affect Indian exports to the US rather than the flow of Russian crude into India.
